Labia majora augmentation is the procedure performed to increase the volume of the labium majus, that is, the outer lips of the genital organ. In cases such as childbirth, menopause and excessive weight loss, many women have wrinkles and loosening of outer lips, especially as they get older. This loosening and wrinkling creates a cosmetic
discomfort. This can lead to loss of self-confidence and sexual problems. In addition, the decrease in the tightness of the labium majus can create a health problem as it cannot fulfill its role as a support on the vagina during daily life and sexual intercourse. In these cases, labium majus augmentation can be applied to give the outer lips a full and tight appearance.
Labium majus augmentation can be made with several different filler materials. In the method called autologous fat filling, the patient’s own fat taken from the belly or leg areas is applied to the outer lips as a filler after undergoing special processes. Since it is its own fat, it is not
allergic and is long lasting. About 40% does not dissolve and remains for a long time.
Another commonly used filler is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body and has a high rate of water retention. It has a very special water-binding structure, so it makes the tissue moist, smooth and helps the movement of joints and muscles. Hyaluronic acid is normally found in all cells. As we age, cells lose their ability to produce hyaluronic acid and the ability of cells to retain water decreases, so the tissue loses its elasticity, smooth and plump appearance. Hyaluronic acid injection binds to water, acting as a space filler, increasing moisture and reducing dryness. Injection of hyaluronic acid into labia majora gives the desired volume and improves the appearance.
The filling process is usually performed with local anesthesia and special cannulas. The process takes a little longer in fat filling, it takes about 15 minutes if hyaluronic acid is used, and about 30-45 minutes if autologous fat is used. Fat harvesting can give discomfort to the patient. For this reason, relaxing with mild sleeping pills can be offered as an option in addition to local anesthesia. In both methods, drugs in the form of topical cream can also be applied before local anesthesia. The application of the filling material takes a very short time. Depending on the situation, one suture can be placed on each side of the tiny holes for cannula insertion.
After the injections, there may be minimal swelling and edema, sometimes there is no swelling at all. You can then return to your daily activities immediately. These filling procedures are very safe methods and have almost no side effects. Ice can be placed after the application, your doctor may decide accordingly. Since it is performed under sterile conditions, antibiotics are generally not required. It is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse for three weeks after the filling application.
